Softening yer kilt

Well I'm going to just set myself up to get shot down, kicked about, chewed up an' spit back out but here we go. Since I just joined this tribe tonite, I will validate my position before posing my question.

I've been a Utilikiltarian for a good number of years. My Workman has been worn from Los Angeles, CA to Pennsic, PA. It has gone camping in West Virgina, kicked about in New Orleans and been to more concerts than I have. It has seen more than its share of sawdust on constructions sites, gotten down and dirty digging trenches, served as an assistant manager in Virginia and performed on stage more times that I could possibly count. My Utilikilt has hiked the Highlands, Lowlands and islands of Scotland, wandered through dilapidated castles in Wales, pounded pints at the Guinness brewery in Dublin, visited the Tower of London and been inside Stonehenge (it had to make a special appointment for that one).

Through all these years, jobs, miles and memories, my faithful Workman has consistently proven itself to be the most attention-getting and functional garment I have ever owned (minus the back pockets which to this day can't fit anything thicker than a small comb, but nevermind that.) With the exception of leather coats and "proper" kilts from Pringle Weavers of Inverness, it is also the most expensive garment in my wardrobe. And with all of that in mind, I feel that I've earned the right to issue a gripe.

As the lead singer of a Scots-Irish band (let's not call it "celtic" the term is horribly misapplied in the music industry) kilts are THE staple of my wardrobe. While the Workman stands head and shoulders above all other kilts in my collection in the ares of being utilitarian and awesome-looking, one thing it isn't, even after years of wear and hard slog, is even moderately soft. To be brutally honest, it first of all is the least comfortable kilt I own and to be completely frank: it hung like shite out of the box and it hangs like shite with curled, wonky pleats now. I hate to say anything negative about an article of clothing that I paid so much for but I realize that I've been in denial about the shortcomings of my otherwise favorite kilt and the time has finally come for me to reach out and seek help from other Utilikilt owners.

It has seen the cold cycle of a washing machine twice over the years; otherwise cleaning has been by hand, rain and river. My frustrations have tempted me to toss the thing into the dryer with several pairs of shoes (or into a barrel full of rocks for a good ol' fashioned kick down a hill) but at the end of the day I simply can't bring myself to take such risks with such a costly item- not without the advice of others, at least. I really love the Workman but the stiffness is in fact annoying enough that if the kilt were to "die" I don't think I would be willing to invest in a replacement even though I wear my Utilikilt more than the rest of my collection combined... probably times two.

What, if anything, can be done to soften the material up a bit and make this garment hang well without CONSTANT fixing? Has anyone found a way to overcome this or do all of us just "deal with it" for the looks and advantages it does offer?

In case anyone's in the SF Bay Area and interested, I'm getting rid of an unused black Workman Utilikilt I've never worn, and is now too big for me (56 L). I'd be happy to chat about it in personal email...

Women in Utilikilts

So, Utilikilts have traditionally been menswear. I feel like I'm sort of intruding, when I'm wearing mine. Men who wear UK's are gaining more and more acceptance and less rude comments about the feminine qualities of their attire, and I feel like I'm short-circuiting that a bit, as a female Utilikiltarian. It seems that with wider acceptance in our culture of trans-gender appearances, and blurring gender definitions, that there are few places left that men(and women, for that matter)have a strong hold on clear markers of their gender identity. Are these the last strands of gender identity? Is our culture's construct of absolute gender falling apart? If so, is it worth trying to save?
What comments do you have?

Kilts in Difficult Places

I've owned three utilikilts for a couple of years now, but today was the first day I've worn them to the staid and somewhat overly-formal school where I teach history. Several students looked at me askance, several came over to ask what I was wearing, and several faculty members made jokes about underwear and so on. The Headmaster said they'd have to add a line to next year's dress code revision, allowing kilts.

Part of me had been dreading this day for years, going into work and getting disapproved or denied in some way. It wound up going very well, and people were very accepting for the most part. A few more times and it will seem quite normal.

Have others on the tribe list experienced similar nervousness, and similar acceptance in their workplace or other very formal environments?

I was just wondering how many of you have worn your utilikilts to work. If so, what kind of work you do and what the reactions were. I work in a fairly conservative environment, but would really LOVE to don my kilt for work occasionally.

Any experiences or thoughts?

Thanks.....

Response to kilt wearing

I live near the Castro in San Francisco. Granted, it's got to be among the most Utilikilt-friendly neighborhoods anywhere.

Still, when I'm walking around in one of my kilts I'm surprised at the number of passersby who comment. Many say "nice kilt," or sometimes "nice skirt," and they obviously mean it (I've had a few sarcastic remarks too, but far fewer).

And then there are the true Utilikilt faithful, who shout "Hey, UTILIKILT!" from the windows of passing cars. Lately I've been wondering if any of those people are members of this tribe. They are in spirit, anyhow.

I was just thinking that, in a sense, Utilikilt wearers have more of an actual sense of tribe (or clan) than most of my tribes here. Have others felt this?

No one has ever yelled "Hey, PANTS" at me.

I am walking up a quiet residential street in East LA (ultra conservative Eagle Rock CA) with my Black UK and Black T-shirt...I hear behind me hey, nice Kilt, what clan are you from?
I look over and there is this ancient guy in a "Scooter (mobility vehicle) with an orange caution flag. He is really moving at a good clip of 10 miles per hour at least. I hesitate, er no Clan.. Er I mean the Utiliclan -out of Seattle- He looks at me shrugs and pipes out, in a brough "I'm from the McCreedy Clan myself"... and keeps rolling down the street... The dude was flying like a bat out of hell on that thing... Brought a smile to my face!

cleaning of a UK

They used to provide instructions, but I've long since "filed" them. The website used to have instructions, but they didn't make it to the new version.

Therefore, here I am.

I have an olive UK and a black UK, both a few years old, neotrad. I've been drycleaning them all this time but I'm getting tired of that. So, what do I need to know about washing them. I know they need to be "blocked", and I guess i can do that. Anyone have any practical tips on cleaning? Left to my own devices I'd likely wash them in cold water, gentle, and then partially dry them in the dry (w/heat) and then remove them and finish the drying process either hanging or laid out flat.

Thanks in advance for your help brethren.

Hey, I figured I'd give you kilted folks first shot at this--

I'm selling my Tan Courduroy "Original" utilikilt, worn once by yrs truly.
Size 37 S.
$100 OBO.
(And considering the festival season is over for the year and you'd have to pay shipping otherwise, and it's $125 new, it's a deal.)

Why am I getting rid of it? I just don't like it, it's too heavy (perfect for winter, though, for you manly types).

Buy it for you, or it makes a good holiday gift.

Contact me via private message iff'n you want it. I'm in Berkeley, but can arrange pickup in downtown SF during weekday mornings as well.

I'm a Scot (Moffatt) and grew up in piping family and my Father was a kiltmaker in the army (A&S Highlanders). I have aways had a kilt since I could stand up.
The kilt is supposed to come to the top of the kneecap, not below the knee. I see too many kilts half-masted and it is wrong.

put on your kilt, and kneel down... if you kilt is touching the ground, it is too long.

New Uk and shrinkage….

I just received my UK. I followed the measuring instructions, and I was between a few of the offered sizes so I erred on the side of the bigger/longer option. I know UK says that it should just about fall or fall off with out a belt,( based on the enclosed pamphlet and my body type) but mine bunches quite a bit when I apply a belt to keep it from going down. The length comes just below my knees. I’ve noticed that some guys have the length bellow the knees and some above. Has anyone ever washed a UK and experienced shrinkage? I deciding if I want to wash it and see if it shrinks or just return it and try a different size.

Experiencing FRICTION?

My boyfriend complained about the chafing he suffered when wearing only boots and socks with his utilikilt. We invented a modification, which we've dubbed the "Fuzzy Flannel Penal Panel" (TM).

To make, just take a rectangle of flannel or other soft material and sew the top edge to the inside of the kilt in the appropriate spot. Since the stitching is on the inside flap and won't show, the stich quality isn't important. So far, the wearer has reported complete comfort and satisfaction.

We plan to bring a pile of panels to Burning Man this year to offer free mods to other kilt wearers. Look for us in the Red Nose District.

Had THE best time working the Utilikilt booth this weekend!!! So many crazy people, so many men wandering by ALREADY in UKs! But we got MANY more into them, including some hot girls into micro-mini UKs!

Men look SO much better in kilts. Wow. It's like...across the board. Man walks in in pants. Boring man. Wouldn't look twice.
Man strides out of UK booth, big grin on face, wearing kilt. Women start staring!

Best part is.... I am now the proud owner of a tan corduroy Original UK! Hard-earned, baby, but SO WORTH IT!

Can a workman's "hammer loop" actually hold a cordless drill?

A friend of mine recently bought a workman's UK, and he said that the hammer loop thingie can expand.... my question is, can it expand enough to hold a standard-size cordless drill?

My bright pink 14.4v Makita needs to be carried around somehow on my person, and if I could just use a UK instead of my toolbelt....that would rock.

Experiences with this?

Resizing a kilt?

I purchased a kilt at the folsom street fair this summer, then promptly lost 70 pounds, going from a size 44 to a 38. Anyone know of someone in the SF bay area that would be able to take this kilt in? It's made by Macleo who are in san diego, but weren't willing to adjust it's size for me.

I'm asbout to buy my 2nd utilikilt. Not sure if I should just get another black original, or go with a mocker/workman/denim one as a 2nd.

The original is holding up quite well to months of daily wear and is the least expensive kilt. But I wonder if one of the others would be nice for it's differences.

Wondering which kilt you all prefer. Especially want to hear from those of you that have more than one kilt.

Thanks

The BEST compliment I EVER got was in my Uttilikilt in San Diego. I was walking around old town in my black Workingman's big black boots and a black t shirt. Walked by a couple and noted her giving me the eye. On my way back she was gone and the guy told me that his wife had said "Thats the sexiest man I've seen all week."

O and they charged me double for the trouble. But I really wanted it. Please don't tell them I told you, just say you saw it on the Playa.

(I'm thinkin on buying one, but am not sure about the laces and "floating pleats" - which to my dress-making memory means effectively a "split-seam" that'll show yer leg when you move...?)

Just got home from a Pagan convention in San Jose. There were UKs by the hundreds (mostly on men, but some women too.) In fact, though sarongs used to be very popular, it seemed clear to me that the UKs are winning people over. It was amazing to see (and plenty of men eager to prove they were regimental, too! LOL!)

Travel Kilt

I'm wondering if any tribe members, male or female, have any comments on the value of a lightweight, hand washable, quick drying , summer weight kilt?

Here's why:

Last summer and the year befor I did some long distance international air travel and in country touring. Of course, Amsterdam is practically the center of the aeronautical travel universe and I noticed that many women traveled in loose fitting skirts--walked about in them, slept in them, traveled literally halfway around the planet in them. And seemed very comfortable.

In Viet Nam, I noticed a similar thing. Tropical climate and humidity seemed to bring out a lot of skirt clad lasses who asserted it was the *only* way to travel in hot weather and one confided (after a few drinks in a bar in Hanoi) that the secret was to not wear underwear. Common knowledge, she asserted, among females traveling in warm, humid climates.

So this got me to thinking. (NO, not about *that*.) About kilts, and comfort and all those freedom of action pleats and maybe not wearing underwear...Oh, alright, maybe a little about *that*!

The next thing I saw was a German woman, maybe 25, wearing a ripstop nylon travel skirt, knee length, available in the European market under the Esprit label. Pockets on the outside like a Utilikilt. She raved about it and how it was just about perfect. I didn't ask the underwear question, hoping to see her in the bar later, but no luck.

So I wrote to Steve or Dave or some person-in-charge at Utilikilts saying why not try it and he more or less blew me off saying try the survival kilt. I don't think he got the part about light weight, quick drying and wearing it in 100% humidity and 95 degree heat.

So what do you think? Does it sound useful? Do any of you women have an opinion on this?

Hi all,

I have just started a tribe for men who like to wear skirts:

http://www.tribe.net/tribe/meninskirts

Of course opinions differ as to whether a kilt is a skirt, but I thought some of the members of this tribe might like to join.

After buying a utilikilt a person is suddenly confronted with a delimma. What to fill all your pockets with? Combined with a five pocket leather vest my kit is the following:

1 knuckle-duster knife in my hammer sling
1 Gerber all-tool on my belt
1 Swiss Army Knife in pocket
1 coin purse
1 telephone book
1 calculator
1 caribiner watch
1 credit-card wallet

What is your filler-kit?

Indian Knockoffs of Traditional Kilts

The Scottish Tartans Authority, the industry body, said that a flood of "cheap and shoddy" tartan imports from the Indian sub-continent was putting the livelihoods of some 200 traditional Scottish kilt-makers and weavers at serious risk. It said a cut-price imported acrylic kilt sold at £39, whereas a traditionally woven one made from 8yds of quality cloth should cost between £150 and £200.

Hello UK clan.

Doug Churchill here aka Firecock on the playa (Happy Camp).

Daniel, this weekend's crew leader at the Grass Valley Celtic Fair sent me to this tribe. We had a great weekend and the sales where brisk.

As a point of introduction, on the UK catalog card, I'm the guy on the beach with the camera! Woohoo!

For the past 2.5 years I wear UKs 100% of the time for work and pleasure. I now have 8 UK's.

I've volunteered for UK for 4 events so far this year and let me tell you, if you are addicted to UKs, there is nothing like spreading the love to new initiates and repeat customers. It's also a way to earn new UKs for your own wardrobe. Let me tell you there's nothing like wearing a new UK with the pride in knowing you helped at an event and you worked your ass off in earning said UK, this weekend was 27 hours booth work in 2 days. The feeling is so much better than simply plopping down the $$$ for a UK, because you earned it and you helped spread the UK message of freedom.

Okay, I'm new here. Thought I'd start a thread. I've been wearing kilts and skirts for years. For the last five years exclusively utilikilts. Long black ones.

Anyway, my Mom has some hang-up complex and I never hear the end of her bemoaning the fact that I can't just wear some pants. She bought me some black Carhart overalls just so I'd have something to wear that wouldn't embarass her. I mean, that was nice but there were ulterior motives behind it.

One time after we went-out to eat we were leaving and this cool old lady took the time to stop and say how good my kilt looked on me. I was like "See Mom? Other people think it looks nice." But it had no affect.

I do what I want anyway, but I was just wondering if I was the only one who got grief from their Moms for wearing one?

I'm wondering if anyone out there has overgrown or undergrown thier UK?

I would love another since I wear the one I have everyday and would like a variety and to beable to have a kilt I wasn't worried about getting really dirty.

Plus I am a full time student that just moved and lost his job, so a new one is out of the question.

I'm looking for one in the 36 or 37 M range. Anyone?

Question: Utilikilt Company homophobic?

Hey all. So glad to have found this tribe! Thanks for sharing...

I have a friend who runs a magazine for radical queers, and was one of the first to get Utilikilts some print exposure. According to him, he did so for next to nothing, and the result was that Utilikilts was features in tons of other magazines for gay men, especually those in the BDSM / fetish communities. Cause they are fucking sexy! I noticed that Utilikilts had a very popular booth at this year's Folsom Street East fest in NYC, and were doing a brisk business.

But then...

My friend, and a few others, have told me that when it comes to doing business wiht the 'mainstream' world, with the media, the fashion industry, and contacts in Scotland, the Utilikilts company has gone to lengths to distance itself from the gay community and it's publications. My friend felt quite betrayed in fact. I dont have any more details than that, and I don;t mean to gossip or anything. I love my utilikilt. But I also love my cheaper but very similar version from another company as well, which I bought after I heard this unfortunate but of gossip. It troubled me some.

Anyone out there have any thoughts on this? Or know anyone at Utilikilts that might clear it up? I am not the most PC fag around, so far from it. But it matters to me when my brother's are fucked with, and I'd like to know if there's any truth to it or not.
Thanks for a great tribe, and for sharing your thoughts and photos. Tribe rocks!

XXX,
Justice

I bought my first kilt last Sunday at the Folsom East Street fair in New York - wore it to dinner that night with the same Sam Brown belt (& different boots) I wore that day.

I LOVE it - wore it to work on 'casual Friday' - very big hit! The President said 'Fantastic!'

I was asked about what I was wearing under it - only once - I replied -'Let's discuss that at the next 'sexual harrassment' seminar with HR!' lol

So I was thrift store shopping in Hayward (armpit of the Bay Area), and in my favourite thrift store, on the "Alternative" rack, I see a familiar logo-- it's a homeless UTILIKILT!

I snag it off the rack- $20! In PERFECT new (If wrinkled) condition!

I get it home, fully expecting to sell it on Tribe and make some money, thinking it was too big....and slipped it on.

Belted, it fits PERFECTLY (if kinda biggish) on my hips. I am in love.
Absolute, pockets-and-pleats, butch-grrl, LOVE LOVE LOVE.

I posted photos in the album. Check it out.

A few nights ago, some Scottish pretty-boy actor was on Lenno and they showed footage of him in a leather UK on the catwalk for a charity event all about men in skirts. Anyone else see this?

Seattle Warrior work-out!

Hail all Boffer Warriors!

The frost is off the ground and the sap is rising in the trees, as is the blood in our veins. Its time to dust off the duct-taped foam and stretch our sword-wielding muscles for our weekly sparring sessions.

For those that are only hearing about this gathering for the first time, You are being invited into a three year old tradition of honor and friendly competition that meets at the feet of the Fremont Troll to play at the noble art of the sword. Whether you have formal training in any style, or none at all, you are welcome to come learn, train, play, and laugh with other Warriors form Seattle and around the Sound. We have had folks drive up all the way from Olympia every week. This is an extremely loose and informal group. There are no dues and no obligation to show, unless you have given your word that you will.

Traditionally, we have met at the Fremont Troll on Wednesday or Thursday around 8:00 pm, but this year, I'm doing a little market research to insure the greatest turn-out. Please respond to this message with the best day of the week and time for you to join us. In making your decision, please consider that we've been known to patron the Dubliner for a pint or two after the carnage. So, If you don't want to show up at your weekly dinner with Grandma stinkin' like a sweaty pub monkey, chose wisely.

We would prefer that everyone bring their own Boffer, but it is not at all unusual for us to share. If you would like to build your own, I have some plans that I found on the net and edited somewhat. Let me know and I'll message them to you. For now, dream of flashing duct-tape and the glory of battle.

Peace,
Otter.

I was flipping through the book "Bravehearts, Men In Skirts, and found a utilikilt featured in the kilt chapter.
At the Chamberlain Ranch Tradional Archery Rendevous in Central Calif. 2 men were wearing utilikilts. I was lucky to be with one of them. The other one was a quiver vendor from Santa Cruz.

About how much would you expect to purchase the various styles for? I ran into someone who'd undergrown his (39W was too large), and so managed to pick up an original for $50.

After perusing the UK site, I find myself wanting a mocker, and I'm basically wondering how much I'd expect to pay for it.

Is there any interest in a UK exchange/swap meet or something like that?

Kilts lost to house fire

The horror!

So yesterday the live/work space that I and several other artists called home pretty much burnt to the ground. Though the fire began in the shop area, it quickly spread to the house, and my room in particular wound up gutted.

Upon returning home my thoughts went immediately to the safety of my friends and family. By the time that I had learned that everyone was okay, my mind had already reflexively begun the process of cataloging everything that had been lost. Topping this list were, sadly, all four of my beloved Utilikilts, including the black leather one that I blew a couple of months of rent money on last spring, when they first went on sale.

Ah well. As an anarchist buddhist punk and a long-time burner, I'm pretty used to the concepts of impermanence and detachment. But dayum! These were my beloved UK's! The coming days. weeks and months are going to be esepcially cold without them.

So, my fellow Utiliclan bretheren, please raise a glass (or shed a tear) for me, and remember: ALWAYS WEAR A KILT! (That way you'll at least save one of them in a disaster.)

- Slim (aka Aaron Muszalski)
