So, Utilikilts have traditionally been menswear. I feel like I'm sort of intruding, when I'm wearing mine. Men who wear UK's are gaining more and more acceptance and less rude comments about the feminine qualities of their attire, and I feel like I'm short-circuiting that a bit, as a female Utilikiltarian. It seems that with wider acceptance in our culture of trans-gender appearances, and blurring gender definitions, that there are few places left that men(and women, for that matter)have a strong hold on clear markers of their gender identity. Are these the last strands of gender identity? Is our culture's construct of absolute gender falling apart? If so, is it worth trying to save?

that's all i know

Re: Women in Utilikilts
Wed, June 30, 2004 - 3:26 PMHave they traditionally been menswear? I guess they probably have. I wouldn't say that your intruding at all.
In my opinion utilikilts look good on anyone, it really doesn't matter if they are male or female.
Clothes are out there to have fun with and in the process maybe turning some heads, if that's what a person is in to.
I wore a tubetop type of miniskirt at Burning Man last year, talk about crossing the lines of gender identity! I think I got more reactions from that then when I was naked. There's a joke in there somewhere.......

Re: Women in Utilikilts
Wed, June 30, 2004 - 4:28 PMReally, what's a utilikilt more than a pocketed pleated skirt? Ok...the UK is specifically desgined with a man's lack of waist/hip proportionality, but other than that, I don't see any reason for anyone not to wear it if it's comfortable.
Especially because UKs haven't hit the "mainstream" just yet, so the only people who'll know that it's "menswear" are people who already own one - and probably don't care. -
-
Re: Women in Utilikilts
Thu, October 14, 2004 - 5:51 PMYou are right, of course. A Utilikilt is exactly a pleated skirt. That's because a Utilikilt (but not all modern kilts) use a box pleat. Real kilts are knife pleated. -
-
Re: Women in Utilikilts
Fri, November 19, 2004 - 9:52 AMNo they don't. They use symmetrical knife pleating.

Re: Women in Utilikilts
Mon, November 29, 2004 - 8:50 AMI'm female, and I don't like wearing skirts. But I love wearing my utilikilt because it does feel like wearing men's clothing to me.
Well, that and it hangs so perfectly on my hips.
And the freeeeeeeeeeedom!
I've yet to meet a guy (or girl) who minded my wearing it. Just a bunch who wanted to be sure it was being worn properly. -

Re: Women in Utilikilts
Thu, February 3, 2005 - 11:13 AMDitto,
I have had many, many skirts, keep trying and they just don't feel right. I mostly wear Uk's all the time now.
Unlike most of my male friends, I have not gotten rid of my pants, however I have gotten rid of ALL my skirts!
Best part is that I have never been able to successfully carry a purse, always lose it or forget it. My Uk's solve that problem so gone are all the purses and skirts, hehehehee
Some of my girlfriends think I'm going butch until they get close enough to wear my lipstick & feel my finger nails!

Re: Women in Utilikilts
Sun, December 5, 2004 - 11:29 PM
That's EXACTLY why I (biological female, dedicated genderqueer) got a Utilikilt. I don't like women's clothing. It's not just a matter of getting a "plain black skirt"-- they just don't have any I like. And then some fashion designer asshole has to slap a flower or butterfly or some fucking Winnie the Pooh character on it. Bleah.
This pretty much sums up the experience for me:
MY BOSS (who I adore, ftr): You've worked for me for 14 years and this is the first time I've ever seen your legs. I like your skirt.
ME: It's not a skirt, it's a kilt. A Utilikilt.
BOSS: It's a *skirt."
ME: It's a KILT.
BOSS: SKIRT.
ME: OK, skirt. But it's a BUTCH skirt.

Re: Women in Utilikilts
Mon, December 6, 2004 - 5:27 AMThat's priceless.
When I wear mine, no one ever dares to call it a skirt. I've walked down the street and had perfect strangers shout out, "Nice kilt!" -

Ego Boost
Sat, June 14, 2008 - 12:28 PMAfter purchasing my first leather UK, the next stop was a military surplus store in town. I turned 50 a few months earlier and was feeling a little tender about my advancing years. Imagine my surprise and delight when a man behind us at the checkout line said "Wow, you look really hot in your kilt and boots". It surprised my partner even more that anyone would make the comment to someone as obviously pair-bonded as we are. *laugh*.
The only thing I love about my UKs more than the comfort is the service we receive at the flagship store! What an amazing crew.

Re: Women in Utilikilts
Mon, December 6, 2004 - 2:02 PMThis an ongoing issue in our group of friends also.
We have resolved to calling our Utilikilts- manskirts.
When I first started wearing mine a year or so ago, a couple of friends told me "nice skirt". Even my 7 year old daughter told me that. That's when the conversations and debates started.
I gave in and am very proud of my manskirt.

Sun, February 27, 2005 - 9:21 PMif ya gots it flaunts it
women are just plain hot and i dont mind them wearing UK's one bit
our culture's construct of "absolute" gender is falling apart?
is it worth trying to save?--probably not it is what it is and it will ever be evolving and changing from one pendulum swing to the other side
evidence--marilyn monroe and bettie page (curvy) to twiggy and early 70's models (thin thin thin) to tyra banks and others (a more healthy curvy)
besides traditional clothing/culture line have blurred considerably since the turn of the last century
well guys seem to like women in business shirts(ala sexy) and they can still wear them to the boardroom women wear pantsuits, but guys usually don't go for tube tops or that little black dress -

Tue, March 1, 2005 - 1:40 PM
I just ordered my first one over the weekend. Now to wait for it to arrive.
I for one have no problem with skirts except for two things: 1) the pantyhose! It's just like being wrapped in plastic that doesn't breathe! and 2) the lack of pockets -- where the blankety blank am I supposed to keep my stuff?
The utilikilt, blessedly, has neither of these problems, so I'm really looking forward to getting it.

Re: Women in Utilikilts
Mon, March 7, 2005 - 7:44 PMOne of the slogans of the Utilikilt company is "we sell freedom", so what kind of Utilikiltarian would I be if I kept my sisters in bondage....
...well okay, so I admit I do keep a few of them in bondage, but not without a safeword...
... okay, sometimes without a safeword, but my point is, as long as they wear it in the traditional manner, I have no problems with women wearing Utilikilts. I recommend the mini. -

They're remaking it now. I needed a double "Beer Gut Cut", which is ironic, since I hate beer! (Although when I was on the phone with Lori, she said on women it shouldn't be called the "Beer Gut Cut", it should be called the "You Have Booty Cut". This made me giggle.)

Tue, March 27, 2007 - 1:38 PMYES!!!
I Love the look of a hot woman in a Utili-Mini-Kilt!
My next door neighbor (male) saw my Kilt one day and he said it was too long. I told him they make minis and his eyes lit up. He's into the genderbending thing... I don't know if he ordered one. Starving musician and all that!

Sat, April 16, 2005 - 7:38 AM<So, Utilikilts have traditionally been menswear. I feel like I'm sort of intruding>
Intrude away! I enjoy the sparkle in the eye, smile, and nod of the head which occurs between any two people wearing Utilikilts. Burning Man alone just wouldn't be the same without 'em. And elsewhere the sparkle and smile seem to just get bigger. I also can't think of a woman I've seen in one that didn't make the world look just that much better ~ but I'd have to say that about men, too.

Re: Women in Utilikilts
Fri, July 15, 2005 - 1:00 AMWhen my boyfriend ordered his first utilikilt, I had in mind to get one too as I didn't want to miss out on all the excitement. That idea went over like a lead balloon. Just when I thought he was openminded, I got one of those killer looks that said 'Don't even think about wearing a kilt." Hmpf. -

Re: Women in Utilikilts
Mon, January 1, 2007 - 1:58 AMI personally think women look hot in a kilt...and yes, Utilikilts are kilts, not skirts. Front aproned skirts open to the left, kilts open to the right. When kilts were first developed as common wear, women's skirts were full length, further separating the two. Now, with women's hemlines going up, and men's hemlines reapearing, who really cares? If it's comfy, wear it. -

Re: Women in Utilikilts
Wed, April 4, 2007 - 6:22 AM"Utilikilts are kilts, not skirts"
I went to Scotland over Christmas last year. As I was sitting down on the airplane, the Scotsman in the seat next to mine said "did somebody tell you that that's a kilt?" I smiled and said "you know how to tell the difference between a skirt and a kilt? If the guy wearing it looks like he'd kick your ass for calling it a skirt, it's a kilt!" He laughed and said "so where do you get a *kilt* like that?"
Nothing to do with Utilichicks, but there it is.

Re: Women in Utilikilts
Fri, April 27, 2007 - 4:03 PMI sometimes think the same thing. But then, I think of my utilikilt as drag. And it's perfect!! How could I possibly not wear it, even if I tend to pair it with a leather halter that shows off my cleavage? -

Re: Women in Utilikilts
Mon, April 30, 2007 - 9:49 AMWorked the Sacramento Highland Games Utilikilts booth this weekend and sold lots and lots of kilts, several of our customers were women. Including my sweetie, Jolly Gardener who now owns 2 originals and a survival. Women love UK's because of the pockets, the most often heard comment was "now I don't have to carry a purse" And another comment from women when the man purchased a kilt "now you can carry your OWN stuff and I won't have to"
female + micro mini UK = HOT
