Kilts at work

topic posted Wed, December 14, 2005 - 8:33 AM by  Scott
I was just wondering how many of you have worn your utilikilts to work. If so, what kind of work you do and what the reactions were. I work in a fairly conservative environment, but would really LOVE to don my kilt for work occasionally.

Any experiences or thoughts?

Thanks.....

I have worn my Utilikilt to work on many occasions. I worked in a bookstore. Almost always the response was very favorable. Most people like to look, and the women as others have noted really like the look.
I have encountered the typical closed minded fellow who thinks I am wearing a female garment.
No doubt the kilt draws a lot of looks, but I would saw most impressions were favorable.
My employer and co-workers thought it was cool.
I live in Denver by the way.

i wear my UKs a good 90% of the time.... and yes, that includes work. I am a GIS technician at an archaeological firm.... the kilts have drawn some interesting comments - many of which could actually be used in sexual harrasment suits.... but I'll not go there - not worth it. I also wear my UKs when I work at the local farmer's market as an ice cream booth operator. Many people there love it - in fact, I dont recall any negative comments from the farmer's markets....

I wear my UK's everyday, year round at work and play.
As a bicycle commuter, I keep a UK here at the office to change into.

My dayjob is Tech Support and Internet Services Admin, I'm also a pro photographer. I too have had some interesting comments that could be used in a sexual harrasment suit. And I've been asked the what's under your kilt question and kilt checks by women that would get me decked or arrested if I were to ask women what's under your skirt do a 'skirt check'. But I ain't complainin' women can sexually harrass me and my UK all they want.

Hey there Scott! Wear it! It may be conservative but it's still a university campus! Do you really think there would be a problem with you wearing the kilt to your office? I'm sure the students wouldn't have a problem with it, maybe some other staff or faculty?

I've worn mine to work, and will wear it again once it gets warmer again! Damn and Brrrrr, these last few days. For those that don't know I am an architect, working in a "fairly conservative" firm atmosphere. Anyway, check out page 2 of my photos at people.tribe.net/tat2dredbear/photos for my black workman's at the office. I wore my black paratrooper boots, a white button down and my family tartan tie to complete the look.

I know you have a black workmans(?). Do you have any others?

I'm a civilian contractor with the DOD. There have been a few occasions when I have been called in during an emergency wearing one of my Kilts.

I have gotten a few strange looks... Mostly positive reaction though. Only one person was totally freaked out... a female admin. Fortunately, I am "technically" within dress code and much higher on the "food chain".

    Cheers!

Unfortunately, I work for an environmental consulting firm that is subject to the rules of OSHA, and thus am *required* to wear pants in the field. I'm still testing the waters in terms of wearing my utilikilt to the office, but since it's a small informal office, I think it might be okay.

I think a good rule of thumb might be that if people wear jeans to work, you could probably be okay with a kilt.

Good luck! Would love to hear how it all works out!

im a stagehand in las vegas. most of my work comes in the way of corp gigs IE; cars shows, software compamies stuff like that. the only place i cant were my kilts is at the bellagio and the wynn. everyplace else is pretty cool about it. my main boss also asked me not to were on show days. 4 of us were them out here and we are very well known for it.
the first time my buddy wore his to work, he was put in charge of building a 40ft scaffold tower for some spotlights he had 4 guys that had never built scaffolding before. so he was having trouble explaining what to do. he finely got frustated and started to climb up the tower when half the sceamed out "NO, DONT CLIMB THE TOWER" yes he had boxers on. badger
  • massaging in a UtiliKilt ! ?

just got a black twill UK for xmas and am looking for an appropriate belt to use when working as a massage therapist, it has to have some 'bend' (on the horizontal plane) and am waiting until after i sign my yearly contract with the spa before i take the dare and wear it to work. i have heard rumors as to the possibility we may have a uniform (will it be imposed?) but since we are ostensibly independent contractors can they do this? i want to wear my damn kilt whilst doing massage!

I'm a librarian at a UK University - and regularly wear either my Utilikilts or my Trad Kilt to work. Both my profession and Higher Education are generally seen as a little "conservative" in the UK, but I've never had more than a raised eyebrow from my Manager - and nothing but possitive comments from students and lecturers. (Then again, I am also heavily tattood and had facial piercings - and occassionally also wear full leathers - so I guess it's also just possible that my Manager has just given up on me... ;) )

On the weekends, I work my own booth at renaissance faires, so I wear a kilt at all times there. Some faires are lax about costuming, so I wear the UK, at others, it is a greatkilt. But the job that pays the bills, I work in heavy construction, so no chance. Right now, I am working in a refinery, so I have to wear fire resistant coveralls.

I work back country, as a wilderness instructor for Outward Bound and for the Boulder Outdoor Survival School. I love my utilikilt for mountain and desert trips. Not as convenient for river trips where we're in and out of the water all day (and where it gets especially buggy).

once the weather gets warm, I wear mine to work. I do phone support for a health care company website. Most of my coworkers find it fairly interesting, and I've gotten a few of my coworkers to don their kilts too!!

Last year I was doing independent consulting at a marketing research company.
My first day on the gig was interesting as the next day the whole team was planning a trip to Magic Mountain.
I was invited to go (nice!!). We had a blast (team bonding thru shared terror type thing).
Seemed casual and the next day I wore shorts. Was told that it violated HR dress code policy (NO SHORTS).
Snagged the HR manual and yep... NO SHORTS... Didn't say anything about Kilts and specified that skirts were OK (no gender specified)...
So the next day (Friday) I wore my Kilt. Got a few funny looks.. My supervisor and I had a chat and her basic vibe was NICE KILT.
So Friday became Trance Plant Kilt day!!! LOFL! OTOH, I was doing mission critical shit and not a permanent employee
(3 mo which ended up being 6 mo) so I could pretty much get away with anything aside from murder or larceny ;-)))
